How it Works
-
Automatic Coverage
Kittens are enrolled in Pets Best at 7 weeks old. You’ll receive all the details to manage the policy. -
Continue the Policy
We ask that you keep the same Pets Best policy for at least one month after adoption to ensure no gaps in coverage. -
Flexibility After One Month
After one month, you can either continue with Pets Best or explore other options, but your kitten must remain insured.
Microchip AKC Reunite
As part of our well-rounded kitten care program, your Maine Coon kitty will get an AKC Reunite microchip to keep them safe and easy to track throughout their life.
This microchip is a dependable and permanent way to identify your kitten
- Makes it easier for vets to confirm their identity and check their medical records.
- Acts as a safety measure if your kitten ever gets lost. Collars and tags can fall off, but a microchip is implanted under the skin and can be scanned
- Your contact information is easy to find and makes it easier to trace your kitten.
- Another great thing about the microchip is that its number gets added to your kitten’s TICA registration, so you’ll have a way to verify your kitten is the one officially registered in TICA.
- Giving your kitten a unique ID number, makes it easier to prove their identity whenever needed.
Essential Health Screenings for Cats in Our Cattery
As a Maine Coon breeder, there are several key x-rays that are commonly suggested to assess the health of your cats and ensure they are fit for breeding. These x-rays help to identify any potential health issues early on, which is critical to both the well-being of the cats and the quality of the kittens they produce.
Here are the typical x-rays we at Bellspurr take of all our Maine Coon cats:
Pinky’s Latest X-Rays (January 2025)
Hip Dysplasia X-rays
- Why – Hip dysplasia is a common genetic condition in Maine Coons, and it can lead to arthritis and other joint problems. X-rays of the hips help to determine whether the cat has a normal hip structure or if there is dysplasia, which can affect their mobility and quality of life.
- What it shows – The x-ray will show the alignment of the hip joints and whether there is any abnormality in the way the femoral head fits into the hip socket.
- Why it’s important – By screening for hip dysplasia, you can prevent passing this condition on to future litters and make informed breeding decisions.
Elbow Dysplasia X-rays
- Why – Like hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia is another inherited condition that can affect Maine Coons. It can lead to joint pain and difficulty moving, which might not be evident until later in life.
- What it shows – Elbow dysplasia x-rays help identify issues like joint incongruity, fragmentation, or osteochondrosis that may cause problems.
- Why it’s important – By evaluating the elbows, you can reduce the likelihood of breeding cats that may pass this condition on to their kittens.
Spine X-rays (for Spondylosis or Other Issues)
- Why – Maine Coons are known for their large size, and some may develop spondylosis (a condition where the vertebrae fuse) or other spinal issues. Regular spine x-rays can help identify these issues before they cause pain or discomfort.
- What it shows – X-rays of the spine will show any abnormalities, such as fusion of vertebrae, narrowing of discs, or other structural issues.
- Why it’s important – Since a breeder’s primary concern is producing healthy kittens, it's critical to check that the breeding cats don't have severe spinal issues that could affect their ability to give birth or cause long-term health problems for themselves or the kittens.
Chest X-rays
- Why – Chest x-rays are often used to evaluate the heart and lungs, especially if there is any concern about heart disease, which is a potential issue in larger cat breeds like Maine Coons.
- What it shows – Chest x-rays help detect signs of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), which is common in Maine Coons. They can also show lung conditions or any respiratory issues that may affect the cat's overall health.
- Why it’s important – Chest x-rays help detect signs of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), which is common in Maine Coons. They can also show lung conditions or any respiratory issues that may affect the cat's overall health.
Pregnancy X-rays (Late Gestation)
- Why – Late in pregnancy, x-rays can be used to evaluate the number and position of the kittens in the womb, particularly if there are concerns about a difficult birth.
- What it shows – The x-ray reveals the number of kittens (or fetuses) and their positioning in the cat's uterus, which helps the breeder prepare for the delivery.
- Why it’s important – By using x-rays late in pregnancy, breeders can prepare for any potential birth complications, such as the possibility of a kitten being in the wrong position, which could cause difficulties during labor.
Additional Considerations
Genetic Testing vs. X-rays
While x-rays can help diagnose physical issues like joint problems, it's also essential to complement x-rays with genetic testing (e.g., for HCM, PKD, and other inherited conditions). Testing helps catch diseases that x-rays may not show, allowing you to make more informed breeding decisions.
Timing of X-rays
X-rays should be performed when your cats are adults (usually around 2 years old or older) to ensure that their skeletal structure has fully developed. This is especially important for conditions like hip and elbow dysplasia, where early intervention can help prevent long-term damage.
Conclusion
For Maine Coon breeders, routine hip, elbow, spine, and chest x-rays, along with late pregnancy x-rays, are vital for ensuring that breeding cats are healthy and free from hereditary conditions that could be passed down to the kittens. Regular x-ray screenings contribute to healthier litters, reduce the risk of painful conditions for the cats, and ensure the long-term welfare of both the adults and their offspring.
